6 AI for Deep Research – Prompting for Depth

✍️ Module 6: Prompting for Depth – Think Like a Researcher

In this module, we’re focusing on a skill that can make or break your results with deep research tools: how to prompt effectively.

Even the most powerful AI tools need direction. This lesson shows you how to craft clear, focused prompts that return meaningful, structured results—and avoids the pitfalls of vague or overly broad requests.

🔑 Why Prompting Matters

AI tools are only as good as the prompt you give them.
When your instructions are vague, the output will likely be shallow, general, or irrelevant.
When your instructions are specific, clear, and scoped, the AI will deliver more accurate and useful results.

💬 Real Prompt Example (from this course!)

Here’s the actual prompt we used across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity:

“I want to create a new short online course for our LearnAI platform, a follow up to my introduction to the EU AI Act module to give people an overview of global trends. Compare how the EU, the UK, and the US each approach the regulation of AI models. What are the key similarities, differences, and implications for Isle of Man tech companies operating internationally?”

✅ It includes context, audience, scope, and a clear goal.
🟠 But we forgot to include a timeframe—a small omission that led to some outdated results.

🧠 A Prompt Structure You Can Use

Here’s a simple prompt framework to help guide your own:

I’m researching [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE].
Please give me a [FORMAT] comparing [SCOPE or APPROACHES] using information from [TIMEFRAME].
Highlight [KEY INSIGHTS or IMPLICATIONS] relevant to [CONTEXT or STAKEHOLDERS].

This helps you cover the five most important ingredients:

  1. Context – why you’re asking

  2. Topic – what you need to know

  3. Structure – the format you want

  4. Timeframe – how recent it needs to be

  5. Relevance – who the output is for

🔄 Bonus Tip: Use a Two-Step Prompting Process

💡 Use a lightweight AI tool (like default ChatGPT or Perplexity) to help shape your deep research prompt before you commit a credit. This lets you test your structure and refine clarity.

✅ Key Takeaway

Good prompting is like briefing a researcher:
Be clear, be specific, and set expectations.
A few extra details in your prompt can make the difference between generic answers and genuinely useful insights.
