3 Research & Resource Building
Module 3: Research & Resource Building
From the course: Design Your Personal AI Brain – Conspire With Yourself: AI Systems for Personal Growth
Welcome to Module 3!
Now that you’ve chosen your first high-value use case, it’s time to build the brain behind your personal AI system.
Most people skip this step and jump straight into prompting — and that’s often why results feel flat or generic.
Your AI system will only be as good as the resources and context you give it. This module will help you curate and create that context, so your AI can think and respond more like you.
Why This Step Matters
Imagine hiring a junior assistant. You wouldn’t expect them to perform well if you didn’t give them:
-
Reference material
-
Clear expectations
-
Examples of how you like things done
The same is true for AI. Without meaningful input, it’s just guessing. With thoughtful input, it becomes a trustworthy collaborator.
What Goes in Your Knowledge Base
You’re going to build two kinds of resources:
1. External Best Practice Resources
These are high-quality materials from experts in your domain. For example:
-
Bloom’s Taxonomy if you’re an educator
-
The STAR method if you’re preparing job applications
-
Copywriting frameworks, legal checklists, UX principles — anything that defines excellence in your field
These give your AI credibility.
2. Internal Context Materials
These are unique to you. They include:
-
Past work you’ve created
-
Notes on how you approach things
-
Your tone of voice, preferences, and values
-
Specific examples of what “good” looks like for you
These give your AI authenticity.
Together, they create a brain that’s both smart and aligned with who you are.
Example: My LearnAI Course Companion
To give you a concrete example, here’s what I added to my Course Content Companion:
-
Bloom’s Taxonomy and guidance on chunking learning content
-
Templates and slide styles from previous LearnAI courses
-
Notes about learner attention spans, tone of voice, and how I like to structure lessons
-
A short “Course Brain” summary I wrote in my own words to explain what LearnAI is and how I want it to sound
This mix helps my AI system offer on-brand, on-message, and on-tone support — without me needing to reinvent the wheel every time.
How to Start: Deep Research Task
One of the best ways to begin is with a Deep Research Task.
Ask your AI:
“Please create a report summarising global best practices and expert advice for [your chosen topic]. Include frameworks, common pitfalls, examples of excellence, and relevant citations.”
This gives you a strong foundation to work from — and you can ask it to turn that report into bullet points, FAQs, or cheat sheets that are easier for your AI to reuse later.
Your Task: Build the Brain
Here’s what to do next:
-
Collect 5–10 resources that are useful, high quality, and relevant to your use case
-
Use AI to help you summarise and chunk long documents
-
Tag and label each piece clearly — e.g. “Email_Tone_Guide” or “ContentPlanning_Cheatsheet”
-
Write a 1-page Project Brain Summary in your own words:
What is this system for?
What do I want it to help me do?
Why does it matter?
This last piece — your personal framing — is what gives your AI a sense of direction and voice.
Bonus Tip: Chunk It Smartly
Large text blocks confuse LLMs. Instead:
-
Split content by theme or purpose
-
Use clear headings and bullet points
-
Keep each document short and focused
-
Name your files or inputs in a way that makes sense to you
This makes it easier to retrieve exactly what you need, when you need it.
What You’ll Have by the End
Once you’ve completed this step, you’ll have:
✅ A best-practice knowledge base tailored to your domain
✅ Context and tone that reflect your real-life work and voice
✅ A system that’s already smarter — because it has something meaningful to draw from
Up Next…
In Module 4, we’ll explore how to infuse your voice and tone into your system even more — and look at when and how to write tailored instructions that guide your AI to act like a trusted collaborator.
Let’s keep building your personal AI brain!
